Welcome, Dr. Zachary Harris is an Illinois-based psychiatrist and psychotherapist working with ages 16 and older
As a Harvard-trained board certified psychiatrist and psychotherapist, I help emerging adults, young professionals, and high functioning adults who are struggling with depression, anxiety, and unresolved trauma connect with their emotions, navigate life transitions, and feel more fulfilled. I offer a holistic approach to medication management as well as a specialized approach to treatment that may involve weekly or biweekly psychodynamic psychotherapy with the thoughtful consideration of medication treatment. My hope is that our work together can help you move forward in alignment with your evolving sense of who and how you hope to be in the world.
Our Work Together
I believe that whether we are working together in therapy, medication treatment, or combined treatment, what is most important in your healing journey is our understanding the meaning of your distress within your life narrative. Psychiatric symptoms and psychological pain lead you to feel less able to navigate life/role transitions or feel a lack of meaning or happiness. I believe that by acknowledging, understanding, and respecting the experience of your distress and not simply medicating it away, we can locate the seed of your healing and help cultivate its growth as you move to feel more creative, present, engaged, and resilient.
My Approach
My treatment approach includes psychotherapy with a focus on psychodynamic, and existential work as well as psychiatric medication management. These approaches and my past studies in religion and philosophy inform my openness to understanding the inherent meaning of life experiences that can often be difficult to talk about and integrate including religious and spiritual experiences, traumatic losses and pain, and the experience of feeling unrooted as one navigates life transitions.
